Yazaki (Samoa)Ltd:June 1999
Started
operations in Samoa in 1992 with the production of electrical wire harnesses for the
global car industry. It has become the largest employer in the private sector with 1400
employees.It is the first manufacturing enterprise in Samoa to be certified to ISO quality
standards. Despite the adverse impact of the Asian financial crisis on the global car
industry, Yazaki has managed to survive by making timely adjustments to its productivity
levels. .
KavaBowl Web Site : May 1999
The Kava Bowl which is run
by Mr Taholo Kami has been a pioneer internet web site for the Pacific . KavaBowl was one
of the first sites for the Pacific Islanders all over the world to share the news and
exchange ideas on the Pacific. Kava Bowl has over the years continued to maintain its
original format to facilitate the sharing of information on a wide range of topics.
Kavabowl has been the benchmark for the development of the Pacific web sites. The
development of Bizconnections was inspired by the KavaBowl. Kava Bowl has been awarded the
Pacific Enterprise Award for May 1999 because of its pioneering work and its willingness
to promote other web sites of the Pacific.
HLB CROSBIE AND UNDERHILL : April
1999
Recently
appointed as the South Pacific Project Facility (SPPF) agents in Fiji. HLB Crosbie and
Underhill is a firm of chartered accountants and business advisors with extensive
experience in the development of export enterprises in Fiji.
STEELCO OFFICE FURNITURE: March
1999
This enterprise has made a dramatic
entry into the competitive office furniture market in Fiji. It has been led by it's
brash, young founder Sunil Chand who has dabbled in a number of business ventures
before settling on the development of Steelco Office Furniture. The main success
factors of Steelco Office Furniture are it's competitive prices and good after sales
service by a highly motivated sales team.
OUTRIGGER HOTELS AND RESORTS :
February 1999
This
Hawaiian based enterprise has in the last two years adopted an aggressive expansion
programme in the Pacific. Recently it has finalised a major its Outrigger Reef Fiji
Resort Project which is expected to be opened in June 2000. Outrigger Hotels and
Resorts already has a number of resorts in the Micronesian region.
MEDCEN SAMOA : January 1999
A modern private
hospital Medcen Samoa was opened for business in December 1998. As a pioneer in the
provision of private sector health services, in an area dominated by Government - owned
hospitals in the region, Medcen Samoa has been selected as the Pacific Business Enterprise
of the month. The project sponsors have been Dr. Emosi Puni and Dr. John Adams. This
project is a 21 bed private medical/surgical in patient facility initially providing
diagnostic and therapeutic services primarily for pediatric and obstetric patients. The
financing package was completed with the assistance of the National Provident fund,
the Development Bank of Samoa and the Pacific Islands Investment facility (PIIF).
The project was complex and financing took many months as it also involved
attracting up to 25 local shareholders. SPPF has been working on this project
with the sponsors for three years taking the idea through all the stages of the
feasibility study and facilitating the funding process.
